Post-Operative Instructions Following Surgical Extraction

The first 24 hours are about protecting the extraction site.

A stable blood clot is an important part of early healing. Avoid disturbing the socket, follow your medication instructions and contact SR Dental Zone if recovery is not progressing as expected.

Bleeding Control

Bite firmly on the gauze placed over the extraction site for approximately 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze once as instructed and maintain firm pressure for a further 30 minutes. Remove gauze before eating or drinking. A small amount of oozing or blood-stained saliva can occur during the first day.

If bleeding remains significant despite sustained pressure, contact SR Dental Zone for advice.

Protect the Blood Clot

On the day of surgery, do not rinse vigorously, spit forcefully, touch the wound or repeatedly inspect the socket. Avoid using a straw; the original instructions recommend avoiding straws for one week. These precautions help reduce disruption of the healing clot.

Numbness

Temporary numbness of the lip, cheek or tongue may continue for several hours after local anaesthesia. Do not chew until normal sensation has returned, and take care not to bite the numb tissues.

Swelling & Rest

Apply an external ice pack for approximately 20-30 minutes at a time during the early hours after surgery as instructed. Do not continue ice beyond the first 24 hours unless specifically advised. Rest, keep your head slightly elevated and avoid strenuous activity during the early recovery period.

Pain & Medication

Take prescribed pain medication according to your clinician's instructions and your medical suitability. If antibiotics or other medicines have been prescribed, take them exactly as directed. Do not take medication to which you are allergic or that your physician has advised you to avoid.

Food & Hydration

Avoid hot foods and hot beverages for the first 24 hours. While numb, choose cool or room-temperature soft foods and avoid chewing over the extraction site. Suitable options include yogurt, soft rice or khichdi, soft-cooked vegetables, creamed cereals, eggs, soft fish, stewed chicken and soups that are not hot. Increase food texture gradually once numbness has resolved and comfort allows.

For the first few days, keep food simple.

Avoid hard, sharp, crunchy or sticky foods that can traumatise the socket or become trapped in the healing area. Chew on the opposite side where practical.

Rinsing & Oral Hygiene

Do not rinse on the day of surgery. Beginning approximately 24 hours after the procedure, gently rinse with lukewarm salt water as advised. Continue cleaning the rest of your mouth, but avoid direct trauma to the extraction site. Do not aggressively probe the socket with a toothbrush, finger, tongue or cleaning device.

Smoking, Vaping & Tobacco

The original document advises avoiding smoking for 24 hours. SR Dental Zone's current surgical-extraction guidance recommends avoiding smoking for at least 72 hours because smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of infection and dry socket. Longer abstinence is preferable; the same caution applies to vaping and other tobacco or nicotine products.

What You May Experience

Mild soreness, swelling, jaw stiffness and some bruising can occur after a surgical extraction. Symptoms should generally become easier as healing progresses. The exact recovery pattern depends on the complexity of the extraction, the tooth involved and your individual healing response.

Dry Socket: What to Watch For

A dry socket can occur when the protective blood clot is lost or breaks down before the socket has healed adequately. Contact SR Dental Zone if pain becomes significantly stronger after initially improving, particularly if it develops a few days after extraction or is accompanied by an unpleasant taste or odour. The socket should be assessed rather than self-treated.

When to Contact SR Dental Zone

Please contact the clinic promptly if you experience

  • Bleeding that remains significant despite sustained gauze pressure
  • Swelling that is rapidly increasing or not following the expected recovery pattern
  • Severe or increasing pain not controlled by the prescribed medication
  • Fever, persistent foul taste or discharge
  • Persistent or unexpected numbness
  • Concerns about sutures, the extraction socket or any other unexpected change

If Sutures Were Placed

Do not pull, pick or repeatedly inspect sutures. Your clinician will advise whether they are dissolving or require removal and when the surgical site can be cleaned more normally. Follow any procedure-specific instructions given at the time of surgery.

The SR Dental Zone Surgical Approach

SR Dental Zone's current oral-surgical pathway emphasizes clinical and radiographic assessment, CBCT and digital surgical planning where indicated, minimally invasive techniques where appropriate, and structured healing and recovery support. Technology is used when it adds meaningful clinical value to diagnosis, planning or surgical execution.

Your Follow-Up

Within 72 hours: Schedule the recommended post-operative review within 72 hours of treatment completion.

During healing: Additional review or suture assessment may be advised depending on the complexity of the extraction and your recovery.

Long-term: Continue regular preventive dental care so that the remaining teeth, gums and overall oral health can be monitored.

Important Reminders

1. A mandatory check-up should be scheduled within 72 hours of treatment completion.

2. Schedule a follow-up visit at SR Dental Zone every six months for the professional preventive care recommended after treatment completion.

3. Protect the extraction site during early healing and contact the clinic if pain, swelling or bleeding is worsening rather than settling.

Individual Surgical Care Matters.

Recovery instructions can differ after wisdom-tooth surgery, complex extraction, bone removal, grafting or other associated procedures. Your procedure-specific instructions from the treating clinician take priority over general guidance.
