Post Operative Instructions Following Implant Placement

The implant has been placed - now the priority is protected healing.

Do not disturb the surgical site on the day of surgery. A metal healing abutment may be visible through the gum; this can be normal. Follow your personalised instructions and contact SR Dental Zone if anything concerns you.

The First 24 Hours:

Avoid vigorous rinsing, spitting, touching the wound, using a straw, forceful chewing or repeatedly pulling the lip or cheek to inspect the site. These measures help protect the early blood clot and healing tissues.

Bleeding:

Some oozing or blood-stained saliva can occur during the first 24 hours. Bite firmly on the supplied gauze over the surgical site for approximately one hour. If significant bleeding continues, replace the gauze and maintain firm pressure again. If bleeding remains heavy or persistent despite pressure, contact the clinic promptly.

Swelling & Rest:

Swelling may increase during the first two to three days after surgery. Keep your head elevated when resting. Use external ice packs during the first 24 hours as advised; avoid applying ice beyond the first 24 hours unless your treating clinician specifically recommends otherwise.

Limit strenuous physical activity during the first 24-48 hours. Rest adequately and avoid activities that provoke bleeding or throbbing at the surgical site.

Oral Hygiene From the Following Day:

Begin gentle warm salt-water rinses from the day after surgery (approximately one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water), three to four times daily for the next few days. Brush the rest of your teeth normally but be gentle around the surgical area. If chlorhexidine has been prescribed, use it exactly as directed.

Do not use a Waterpik or similar water-flossing device, interdental cleaning device, or hydrogen-peroxide rinse around the fresh surgical site for at least two weeks, or until SR Dental Zone advises that it is safe.

Medication

Take all prescribed medicines exactly as instructed. Use prescribed pain-relief and anti-inflammatory medication according to the recommended schedule and your medical suitability. If antibiotics have been prescribed, take them as directed. Do not take any medicine to which you are allergic or that your physician has advised you to avoid.

Diet

On the day of surgery, choose nourishing liquids and soft, cool or lukewarm foods. Avoid very hot foods and drinks, sharp or crunchy foods, and chewing directly over the surgical area. Do not use a straw for the first 24 hours. The original instructions also advise avoiding carbonated beverages and hot liquids for 48 hours.

Simple soft-food choices

Yogurt, soft rice or khichdi, soft-cooked vegetables, creamed cereals, eggs, soft fish, stewed chicken and soups that are not hot. Increase food texture gradually only as comfort and healing allow.

Smoking, Nicotine & Alcohol:

The original implant instructions advise avoiding smoking after surgery because it can delay tissue healing. SR Dental Zone's current full-mouth implant recovery guidance goes further and recommends avoiding smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco, gutka, pan masala and other nicotine-containing products during implant healing, with a minimum three-month abstinence period recommended. Alcohol should be avoided during early healing, especially while taking prescribed medicines.

Healing, Follow-Up & Long-Term Implant Care

Healing & Osseointegration:

After placement, the implant enters a biological healing phase in which it integrates with the surrounding bone. SR Dental Zone's implant information describes this as the osseointegration stage. The original post-operative guidance notes that restoration is commonly considered at approximately 10-12 weeks, but the actual timing is determined by implant stability, bone quality, healing and your individual treatment plan.

When to Contact SR Dental Zone

Please contact the clinic promptly if you notice:

  • Bleeding that remains significant despite sustained gauze pressure
  • Swelling that is rapidly increasing or concerning
  • Fever, persistent foul taste or discharge
  • Severe or increasing pain not controlled by the prescribed medication
  • Unexpected movement or looseness of the healing component
  • Persistent numbness or any other unexpected change that concerns you.

Urgent Medical attention

Difficulty breathing or swallowing requires urgent assessment. Seek emergency medical care without delay and inform SR Dental Zone.

Your Follow-Up Journey:

Within 72 hours: Schedule your first post-operative review within 72 hours of treatment completion.

During healing: Attend the additional reviews recommended by your treating team so healing, soft tissues, implant stability and readiness for restoration can be assessed.

Restorative phase: SR Dental Zone will advise when the implant is ready for the next restorative stage. Do not assume a fixed timeline simply because the surgical site feels comfortable.

From Surgical Recovery to Implant Maintenance

Once healing is adequate, your care transitions from protecting the surgical site to maintaining the implant and surrounding tissues. SR Dental Zone's continuing-care guidance recommends regular implant reviews and professional maintenance, generally at six-month intervals, with the exact schedule personalised to your clinical needs.

SR Dental Zone Digital Implant Workflow

The clinic's current implant pathway combines CBCT and intraoral scanning, personalised digital treatment planning, guided implant placement where appropriate, healing/osseointegration and CAD/CAM restorative workflows. These technologies support precision and planning, but they do not replace careful healing, hygiene and long-term professional maintenance.

Important Reminders

1. A mandatory check-up should be scheduled within 72 hours of treatment completion.

2. Schedule a follow-up visit at SR Dental Zone every six months for the professional care and maintenance recommended after treatment completion.

3. Attend all additional healing-phase appointments recommended by your treating clinician before the final restoration is completed.

Individual Healing Matters:

Surgical complexity, implant stability, grafting, medical history, medications and tissue response can alter recovery instructions and timing. Your treating clinician's personalised instructions take priority over general guidance.
