Post Operative Care Instructions Following Full Mouth Rehabilitation with Immediate Implant Placement and Fixed Provisional Restoration
Congratulations!!! You have undergone a comprehensive full mouth rehabilitation involving the removal of compromised teeth, immediate placement of dental implants, and delivery of a fixed provisional restoration. While your new teeth are fixed and functional, the implants require a healing period to integrate securely with the jawbone. Your cooperation during this phase is essential to ensure long-term success.
Bleeding:
In most cases, minimal bleeding will occur as the wound is typically closed with sutures. If sutures are used, they are usually dissolving and will fall out within 5–10 days after surgery. Some bleeding and oozing may be expected during the first 24 hours. Apply firm biting pressure to the gauze pack over the surgery site for approximately one hour. Remove the gauze and check the site for bleeding. If significant bleeding persists, replace the gauze pack and apply firm pressure for another hour. Repeat as necessary. A tea bag can be used if your gauze supply is exhausted. Refrain from vigorous chewing, spitting, rinsing your mouth, or sucking through a straw for 24 hours. Allowing the tissues to rest undisturbed facilitates the healing process. Avoid continually pulling at your lip to inspect the operative site.
Swelling:
Depending on the procedure, swelling may or may not occur. Swelling typically reaches its peak within 2 or 3 days after surgery. Elevating your head (in a recliner or using multiple pillows) can help reduce swelling. Continuous ice packs applied for the first 2–4 hours are beneficial. However, ice should not be used after the initial 24 hours.
Oral Hygiene:
Good oral hygiene is essential for successful healing. Do not rinse vigorously during the first 24 hours. Beginning the following day, use the prescribed mouth rinse as directed and rinse gently. Continue brushing carefully with a soft-bristled toothbrush, paying particular attention to the areas around the prosthesis. Do not use water flossers or interdental cleaning devices unless specifically advised by us.
Rest & Recovery:
Mild discomfort, swelling, bruising, and minor bleeding may occur during the first few days following surgery. These are normal healing responses. Apply ice packs externally over the surgical areas for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first 24 hours. Avoid strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, and excessive bending for at least one week. Rest adequately and keep your head elevated while sleeping during the initial healing period.
Medication
Take all prescribed medications exactly as instructed. Complete the full course of antibiotics if prescribed, even if you feel well. Pain medications and anti-inflammatory medications should be taken according to the recommended schedule.
Diet Instructions:
• On the day of your surgery, commence with nourishing liquids and soft/colder foods, such as ice cream, pudding, yogurt, and soups (not too hot).
• Avoid extremely hot foods, foods with sharp edges (chips, pretzels, etc.), and chewing immediately over the surgery area. – Refrain from using straws for the rst 24 hours.
• Gradually resume your normal diet as tolerated.
Vegetarian Options:
- Water
- Yogurt
- Juice
- Soups (not too hot)
- Creamed cereals
- Milkshake (without a straw)
- Kichdi/ Soft-cooked rice and vegetables.
Non-Vegetarian Options:
- Soft-boiled or scrambled eggs
- Broiled fish or stewed chicken
- Boneless meat
- Pancakes
- Soups (be cautious, avoiding excessive heat)
Soft Foods Upon Resolution of Numbness: Gradual Dietary Increase
Please refrain from smoking for 24 hours after the procedure.** Smoking can hinder tissue regeneration and prolong the healing process. Additionally, it may increase the risk of excessive bleeding.
Other Considerations: We will inform you when your implant is ready for restoration, typically within 10 to 12 weeks following implant placement.
Smoking and Tobacco Use:
Smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco, gutka, pan masala, and all nicotinecontaining products must be strictly avoided. Tobacco significantly reduces blood supply to healing tissues and increases the risk of implant failure, infection, delayed healing, and long-term complications. Abstinence for a minimum of three months is strongly recommended.
Alcohol Consumption:
Alcohol should be avoided during the initial healing phase, particularly while taking prescribed medications. Alcohol may interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications. A minimum abstinence period of two to four weeks is recommended.
Adapting to Your New Teeth:
Temporary changes in speech, increased salivation, minor pressure sensations, or a feeling of fullness may occur during the first few weeks. Mild irritation of the cheeks or tongue can also occur as you adapt to the new prosthesis. These symptoms are generally temporary and improve with time.
When to Contact SR Dental Zone:
Please contact the clinic immediately if you experience:
• Excessive or persistent bleeding
• Rapidly increasing swelling
• Fever or signs of infection
• Persistent foul taste or discharge
• Severe pain not relieved by medication
• Difficulty swallowing or breathing
• Any looseness, movement, or fracture of the provisional restoration.
Follow-Up Care:
Regular follow-up visits are essential to monitor healing and implant integration. Attendance at all scheduled appointments allows us to ensure that your rehabilitation is progressing as planned and helps maximise the long-term success of your treatment.
Important Note:
Your fixed provisional restoration allows you to leave the clinic with functional teeth immediately after surgery. However, successful treatment depends upon protecting the implants during the critical healing period. Following these instructions carefully will significantly improve the predictability, longevity, and success of your full mouth implant rehabilitation.
Mandatory Follow-Up Visits:
Regular follow-up appointments are essential to monitor healing, evaluate implant integration, and ensure the long-term success of your rehabilitation. Your first review appointment should be scheduled within 72 hours of treatment completion. Subsequent follow-up visits will be advised based on your healing progress and clinical requirements.
