Comprehensive Instructions for Orthodontic Care
Your Role Matters.
Whether you are using conventional braces, clear aligners or another orthodontic appliance, consistent home care and good oral hygiene are important to the success of treatment.
Keeping Your Teeth & Appliances Clean:
Clean carefully between, under and around wires, brackets and the gumline using the specially designed toothbrush recommended by your orthodontist. Daily flossing is important for removing plaque and food particles between the teeth. After brushing, rinse your mouth and toothbrush thoroughly, and follow the cleaning technique demonstrated by your orthodontist.
Food and plaque trapped around orthodontic appliances can make cleaning more difficult and may contribute to cavities, gum swelling and enamel staining. Remove food particles after meals as thoroughly as possible.
Professional Cleaning
While wearing braces, schedule regular professional cleanings every six months to help maintain the health of your teeth and gums.
Food Guidance:
- Apples: Do not bite into a whole apple; cut it into small pieces.
- Bubble Gum: Ask your dentist whether sugar-free gum is suitable for you.
- Candy / Sticky Sweets: Avoid caramel, toffees and other sticky or sugary treats that may damage appliances.
- Carrots: Slice thinly rather than biting into hard pieces.
- Corn On The Cob: Remove the kernels from the cob before eating.
- Sticky Foods: Avoid foods that may bend wires or pull brackets loose.
Sugary Foods: If consumed, brush your teeth promptly or rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.
Avoid During Treatment: Bones, hard meat, ice, nuts, popcorn, pizzas and burgers, as advised in your orthodontic instructions.
