Post operative Instructions Following Implant Placement

Congratulations on completing the initial phase of implant therapy, which involves the surgical placement of your dental implants. Please refrain from disturbing the wound on the day of surgery. Avoid rinsing, spitting, or touching the wound.

It is normal for a metal healing abutment to protrude through the gum tissue. While some post-operative effects may be minimal, it is advisable to follow these guidelines or contact our office in case of any doubts. Please note that there is no additional charge for postoperative care at our office.

**Bleeding:**

In most cases, minimal bleeding will occur as the wound is typically closed with sutures. If sutures are used, they are usually dissolving and will fall out within 5–10 days after surgery. Some bleeding and oozing may be expected during the first 24 hours. Apply firm biting pressure to the gauze pack over the surgery site for approximately one hour. Remove the gauze and check the site for bleeding. If significant bleeding persists, replace the gauze pack and apply firm pressure for another hour. Repeat as necessary. A tea bag can be used if your gauze supply is exhausted. Refrain from vigorous chewing, spitting, rinsing your mouth, or sucking through a straw for 24 hours. Allowing the tissues to rest undisturbed facilitates the healing process. Avoid continually pulling at your lip to inspect the operative site.

**Swelling:**

Depending on the procedure, swelling may or may not occur. Swelling typically reaches its peak within 2 or 3 days after
surgery. Elevating your head (in a recliner or using multiple pillows) can help reduce swelling. Continuous ice packs applied for the first 2–4 hours are beneficial. However, ice should not be used after the initial 24 hours.

**Oral Hygiene:**

Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing regularly, and using mouthwash. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as they can hinder healing.

**Post-Operative Care Instructions**

**Day Following Procedure:**

– Begin rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) approximately 3-4 times daily for the next few days after surgery.

– Brush your teeth and gums as usual, but exercise caution in the area of the procedure.

– Refrain from using a Waterpik® or similar device, as well as hydrogen peroxide rinses, for at least two weeks following surgery. If prescribed, a chlorhexidine rinse may be used twice or thrice daily instead of salt water.

**Activity:**

– Limit physical activity during the initial 24-48 hours after surgery to prevent post-operative bleeding and discomfort.

– When lying down, elevate your head on a pillow. Consider placing a towel on your pillowcase to prevent staining from blood-tainted saliva.

**Medication:**

– Commence taking prescribed pain medication as soon as the local anaesthetic wears off.

– Consume the prescribed antibiotics as directed to prevent infection.

– For severe pain, take the prescribed medication as prescribed.

– Refrain from taking any of the above medications if you have an allergy or have been advised by your doctor not to do so.

**Diet:**

– On the day of your surgery, commence with nourishing liquids and soft/colder foods, such as ice cream, pudding, yogurt, and soups (not too hot).

– Avoid extremely hot foods, foods with sharp edges (chips, pretzels, etc.), and chewing immediately over the surgery area. – Refrain from using straws for the rst 24 hours.

– Gradually resume your normal diet as tolerated.

**Note:** – Avoid carbonated beverages and hot liquids for 48 hours.

**Vegetarian Options:**

Water

Yogurt

Juice

Soups (not too hot)

Creamed cereals

Milkshake (without a straw)

Kichdi/ Soft-cooked rice and vegetables.

**Non-Vegetarian Options:**

Broiled fish or stewed chicken

**Soft Foods Upon Resolution of Numbness: Gradual Dietary Increase**

**Please refrain from smoking for 24 hours after the procedure.** Smoking can hinder tissue regeneration and prolong the healing process. Additionally, it may increase the risk of excessive bleeding.

**Other Considerations:** We will inform you when your implant is ready for restoration, typically within 10 to 12 weeks following implant placement.
