Comprehensive Instructions for Orthodontic Care

Congratulations on taking the first step towards achieving a well-aligned, aesthetically pleasing, and healthy smile by undergoing orthodontic treatment. Whether you opt for conventional braces, clear aligners, or other orthodontic appliances, the success of your treatment hinges on your compliance with care and your efforts to maintain the cleanliness and health of your teeth and braces.

To effectively clean between, under, and around the wires, brackets, and your gums, kindly use only the specially designed toothbrush. This tool will enable you to loosen any food particles effectively.

  • Daily flossing is crucial to remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth.
  • After brushing, rinse your mouth thoroughly and rinse your toothbrush as well.
  • Always adhere to the proper techniques demonstrated by your orthodontist. The brackets and wires on your teeth present a challenge in cleaning them effectively.
  • Trapped food particles and plaque serve as breeding grounds for cavity-causing bacteria. If gum disease develops, it leads to gum swelling, further complicating proper cleaning.
  • Therefore, it is paramount to remove food particles from your mouth after each meal to prevent tooth enamel staining.

While wearing your braces, it is essential to schedule regular cleanings every six months to ensure the health of your teeth and gums.

Foods to Avoid:

Certain foods should either be avoided or modified during orthodontic treatment to avoid damaging your braces or causing dental issues. Please refer to the following list for guidance:

  • Apples: Avoid biting into whole apples. Instead, cut them into small pieces.
  • Bubble gum: Consult your dentist to determine if you can chew sugarless gum.
  • Candy: Refrain from consuming caramel, toffees, chocolates, and other sugary treats.
  • Carrots: Thinly slice carrots to avoid damaging the wires.
  • Corn on the cob: Remove the kernels from the cob to prevent wire bending.
  • Sticky foods: Avoid foods that can bend wires or pull brackets off.
  • Sugary Foods: If you must indulge, brush your teeth immediately or rinse your mouth with water.
  • Avoid: Bones, hard meat, ice, nuts, popcorn, pizzas, and burgers during treatment.

If a bracket or wire becomes loose, please contact the office as soon as possible so that it can be cemented or replaced.
